Alice Munro

May 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

So Alice Munro beat off strong opposition to win the Man Booker International Prize and, my God, hasn’t she earned it! I read her short stories – most of them – over and over with a sense of wonder. Lives conjured up so brilliantly and in such relatively few words of crafted, careful but unprecious prose. If there’s a better writer of short stories now writing, or a better book of stories than Runaway , I’m not sure who they are or what it is.

Okay, there is Lorrie Moore, and Annie Proulx at her best, and there was Carver and before him Hemingway, and Lawrence before him, but Alice Munro … I would give, truly give, a few years of my life to be able to write as well as her.

What was that deal Robert Johnson did with the devil at the crossroads?
