I’m delighted to say that tomorrow, Tuesday, 14th July, the University of Nottingham are awarding me the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters.
Anyone wishing to get a glimpse of me wearing the obligatory funny hat and gown, can do so by logging on to http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/current/graduation/ceremonies/
The ceremony is live on that site between 11.00 and 12.00 am on the Tuesday morning, and can also be viewed for some time afterwards.
As Alice Munro observed, when she was awarded the International Man Booker [not that I'm drawing direct comparisons] you carry on writing into your 70s and then they give you a prize and everyone from your life looks up, startled! You must have been doing something right all along. Well, she was – and is – that’s for sure.
